THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Hindi Prachar Sabha on Thursday formally handed over to K J Yesudas a letter written by Lata Mangeshkar congratulating him on completing 50 years in playback singing.

Sabha president S Thankamony Amma handed over the handwritten letter, laminated and framed, to Yesudas at a brief function at Hotel Taj Vivanta, Vazhuthacaud. Sabha secretary Prof K Kesavan Nair also was present on the occasion. In March, Lata Mangeshkar had written to the Hindi Prachar Sabha expressing her pleasure in having been able to sing with Yesudas.

‘’Yesudas is a great personality. He has sung many songs for Hindi films, all of which have become superhits. I am happy to have been able to sing with such a great artiste,’’ Lata wrote.

The Hindi Prachar Sabha had requested Lata Mangeshkar to write a few words about Yesudas for its magazine ‘Keral Jyothi.’

On Wednesday, the Kerala Assembly had organised a felicitation to Yesudas on his completing 50 years in playback singing. He was described as a singer extraordinaire who shaped Malayalees’ taste for music and as the possessor of a voice which lent the most sublime expression to the beauty of the Malayalam language.
