Harvest at ‘model’ rooftop garden

The harvest of vegetables at the rooftop cultivation of Baalu Dileep, a sixth standard student of Paruthipally Government VHS, was held on Tuesday.

Baalu Dileep had started the rooftop cultivation with the seeds provided to students by the State Agriculture Department as part of integrated vegetable cultivation.

Thiruvananthapuram district agriculture officer A M Sunil Kumar, along with Krishipadam team, attended the harvest of vegetables at the residence of Baalu Dileep.

Agriculture deputy director Nazeera Beegum, who is in charge of the vegetable cultivation, lauded the efforts of Baalu Dileep, his father Dileep Kumar and mother Jalayaja, in making the cultivation a great success.

The vegetable cultivation was done in paint tins and sacks. Cucumber, bitter gourd, snake gourd, coccinia and tomato were grown. The Agriculture Department had distributed vegetable seeds to 48 lakh students in the state.

The teachers of the school said that the cultivation by Baalu was taken as a role model by other students of the school. The documentation section of the government, Greentouch, has filmed the cultivation by Baalu, to be screened in other schools.
