THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sai Gramam, Thonnakkal, is emerging as an example for the entire state in energy conservation, Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal said the other day.

 He was speaking after inaugurating the first phase of energy conservation schemes at the Sai Gramam. Sai Gramam has 30 or so energy conservation projects underway, according to a statement issued here.

 All street lamps on the campus are solar energy-powered. Ninety-five per cent of the lamps are energy-efficient Compact Fluoresecent Lamps (CFL). Biogas and solar energy are used to heat water and cook food in the Sai Gramam canteen.Thus, only 7,000 units of electricity is required a month in the place of 21,000 units. NABARD chief general manager K C Sasidhar presided. Sai Gramam executive director K N Ananda Kumar, vice-chairman K Gopakumaran Nair, Mudakkal panchayat president K Lenin and district panchayat member Satheeshan were present.
