THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: This time, the Central Prison, Poojappura, is celebrating the Prison Day in a unique way. The prison authorities will honour retired officials of the Prison above the age of 65 on the concluding day of the celebrations. Central Prison superintendent B Pradeep said that around 25 retired officials would be honoured as part of the celebrations. They will be presented with mementos at a function to be held in the Prison on Thursday.

“This is the first time that such a function is being organised,“ said Pradeep. The celebrations, which started on Tuesday, have a handful of other programmes to make the event a noteworthy one.

On Wednesday, there will be a ‘kaviyarangu’,

in which eminent poets like Madhusoodanan Nair, D Vinayachandran,

Murukan Kattakkada and Girish Puliyur will participate.

The ‘kaviyarangu’, which is also a rare event during Prison Day celebrations, is expected to alleviate the mental tension of the inmates of the Prison.

A service organisation, Society of Universal Love (SOUL), had conducted a ‘gana mela’ for the inmates of the Prison on Christmas eve, which had a very positive impact among the prisoners. “It brought the prisoners to a festive mood,” said Pradeep.

The ‘gana mela’ also brought to light the talents of some of the inmates in music who also sung with members of SOUL.

‘Kaviyarangu’ is also expected to make such a healthy impact. There will also be a ‘thayambaka’ performance by R S Gopikrishnan, who has won many prizes in school art festivals.

On Tuesday, the celebrations were inaugurated by Law Secretary C P Ramaraja Prema Prasad. The function, which was presided over by the  Principal of LBS Institute of Technology for Women, Prof. P A Shahida, had the presence of cine artistes Baiju and Krishnaprabha.

A comedy show was presented by Mekkad Rajan, followed by various cultural programmes staged by the students of LBS Institute.

The valedictory function on Thursday will be inaugurated by Finance Minister K M Mani. V Sivankutty MLA will preside over.
