THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has taken steps to cancel the BPL ration cards secured by government officials. Labour Minister Shibu Baby John said here on Thursday that around 16,000 cards would be cancelled in this regard. Directives have been issued to take department-level action against the officials, the Minister said.

The government had detected that around 24,000 government employees had secured BPL cards in violation of norms. Though the government requested the officials to convert their BPL cards into APL category, only 8,000 responded. The Minister said that the government would take steps against all those who had illegally secured BPL cards.
