THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The New Indian Express senior reporter Athul Lal A G has won a special mention in the Maxwell Fernandez Memorial Award instituted by the Alumni Association of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Kerala University.

He got the special mention for his four-part series on farmer suicides in Wayanad district published in these columns from November 11 to November 14, 2011. Athul, who hails from Nemom, is presently working with the Kozhikode bureau of Express.

The first Maxwell Fernandez Memorial Award for the best investigative report from Kerala in 2011 was won by Vinoy Mathew, chief sub-editor, Mathrubhumi, Kozhikode.

Vinoy’s investigative report on agricultural loans that appeared in Mathrubhumi from November 15 to 19, 2011, won him the award. The award, which carries `10,000 and a plaque, is instituted by Sheba Fernandez in memory of her brother Maxwell Fernandez, who was instrumental in establishing the first Mass Communication and Journalism post- graduate course in Kerala in 1977.

The award is managed by the MCJ Alumni Association. The time and venue of the award function would be announced later.
