THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Poonthura Police on Saturday seized a huge collection of pirated and pornographic CDs on a raid conducted at a residence at Beemapally near here. The police, which acted on a tip-off received by the Commissioner of Police, seized 10 lakh CD covers and 825 CDs from the centre. “The arrested, Faizal Khan, 42, was supplying pirated CDs to traders and local youths who approached him. Majority of the CDs contained pornographic videos,” said Poonthura CI CS Vinod.

The police said thatFaizal Khan was operating a facility in which 60 CDs could be produced in three seconds.

The police also seized computers, six CD writers and other equipment used for the pirated CD production. The accused confessed that he had been in the trade for the past 15 years.

The house which was located 10 m from the main road was convenient for the arrested to carry out the trade, the police said.

The raid was led by DCP V C Mohanan, Shanghumugham Assistant Commissioner K S Vimal, Poonthura CI C S Vinod and SI Jayasanal. Earlier in 2004 the police had to face opposition from some residents in the area against their attempts to check the pirated CD trade in the area.

"This time the locals cooperated with our effort. The office-bearers of the Beemapally Jamaath have extended whole-hearted cooperation to prevent illegal CD trade in the area,” Vinod said. The police are planning more raids in the coming.
