THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With a view to overcome the severe  water shortage in the tourist hub of Kovalam and surrounding areas, administrative sanction has been given for a ` 15-crore project mooted by the State Tourism Department. Out of the total outlay, ` 1 crore will be contributed by the City Corporation.

Tourism Minister A P Anil Kumar said that once the project is completed, it will go a long way in addressing the long-felt needs of  an important region. Ward 5 of Vizhinjam grama panchayat and ward 8 of Venganoor grama panchayat will directly benefit from the project. The Kerala Water Authority will implement the project in a year’s time.

“The initiative is based on the State Tourism Policy, which is committed to basic infrastructure development to strengthen the potential of the State in the Tourism sector,” the Minister said, and added that the Kovalam project was a notable step in this direction.
