THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The appointment of S K Sudheer as the head of the Optoelectronics Department of the University of Kerala, Kariavattom, was reported to the Syndicate by the Vice-Chancellor at the Syndicate meeting on Thursday.

The VC had earlier issued the order appointing Sudheer to the post after the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University, had revoked the decision to appoint another person.

Earlier Sudheer, the first ranker in the interview to the post was not considered alleging that he was over-aged and not eligible and the legal advisor had recommended the appointment of the second-ranker. This had generated much controversy and the Chancellor had revoked the appointment.

K Madhukumar has been appointed as the Controller of Exams, Kerala University. Earlier, his nomination to the post had also sparked controversy when the selection committee’s suggestion was overruled by the Syndicate by putting it to vote.

When the selection committee led by VC A Jayakrishnan had nominated Madhukumar, members of Muslim League and Kerala Congress (M) had joined the Left to vote against him. However, on Thursday, cutting across party lines the nomination of Madhukumar was agreed upon.

C G Rajendrababu has been appointed as the Lexicon director. He is now the Madras University Malayalam head. A five-member committee has been appointed to look into the allegations against four teachers in the research departments. The members are P S Sreekala, Jolly Jacob, K L Vivekanandan, Jamalkunju and P Mohanachandran Nair.

The Syndicate has decided to hand over the construction and maintenance work of the Kariavattom PG Womens hostel’s toilet block to BSNL construction wing.

The Kerala University Union would be given an additional fund of Rs 5 lakh.
