Panchayat and Social Welfare Minister M K Muneer is expected to call an urgent meeting on Monday in the wake of a complaint that an elderly man had molested a nine-year-old girl, an inmate of the Sree Chitra Poor Home at Pazhavangadi here.

Following news reports on the incident, Social Welfare director M S Jaya visited the poor home on Sunday afternoon.

She said that the man, a 60-year-old, who was employed as a guard at the Vanchi Poor Home on the same campus of the Sree Chitra Poor Home, had been handed over to the police on the day the incident occurred.

The young girl is studying in the school which functions at one end of the same compound where the Sree Chitra Poor Home is situated.  The Vanchi Poor Home is situated in between the two institutions.

The girl was returning to the Sree Chitra Poor Home alone when the incident occurred.

“The Poor Home superintendent had reported the incident to the police immediately. We have also asked the Poor Home authorities to ensure that the girls return home from school in a group,” Jaya said.
