‘Thunderbolts’, the elite commando force of Kerala Police, are now equipped with new vehicles.

The force has been provided with mufti-utility vehicles Tata Winger and Mahindra Xylo, to reach out in tension-affected areas in a swift manner.

The Home Department hopes that by providing the vehicles, the functioning of the commando wing would become more efficient as the multi-utility vehicles would enable them to navigate through unfriendly terrain in a speedy manner.

Thunderbolts, the commando force constituted as part of the India Reserve Battalion, set up in accordance with the Centre’s directions post the Mumbai terror strike, first demonstrated their skill on August 14, 2012 and the force’s passing out parade was on August 24. There are 160 commandos in the force.

Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan flagged of the vehicles at a function held at the police headquarters here on Monday. Director General of Police K S Balasubramanian, Additional DGPs Vinson M Paul, P Vijayanand, B Sandhya, Inspectors General Sheik Darvesh Saheb, Yogesh Gupta, Manoj Abraham, M R Ajith Kumar and Thunderbolt Assistant Commandant L Soloman, among others, took part in the function.
