Aimed at generating additional revenue, the Department of Posts has come up with two new parcel services that provide free pick-up for orders above Rs 7,500 (‘Express Parcel’) and cash-on-delivery for consignment value of up to Rs 50,000 (‘Business Parcel’). Through the new services, the department expects to generate additional revenue of Rs 100 crore a year.

‘Express Parcel’ is an air mail service and ‘Business Parcel’ a surface transport. Officials said that the parcels booked under these services would be delivered in 72 hours. An official at the Kerala Postal Circle said that most of the e-commerce companies were making use of the services and many others have shown interest.

The charge for local service of Express Parcel is Rs 30, which goes up to Rs 80 in case of deliveries to other states. These charges are applicable for items that weigh up to 500 grams. For additional 500 grams and up to 5 kg, the department will charge an additional Rs 8 to Rs 20. A charge of Rs 10 to Rs 22 is also being charged for every additional 500 grams thereafter.

However, for Business Parcel, customers will have to pay  Rs 45 to Rs 115 for items that weigh up to 2 kg and  Rs 12 to Rs 30 for additional one kg up to 5 kg and Rs 14 to Rs 32 for every additional kg.

In Kerala, Express Parcel is available only in Thiruvananthapuram district. The other cities where the service is available include Agra, Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Patna, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Mumbai, Pune, Parwanoo, Shillong and Surat.

Business Parcel, meanwhile, has nationwide coverage.

In fact, these services are not for e-commerce companies alone. As far as the pick-up facility is concerned, it is free for customers.
