Award Presented to Nambi Narayanan
The first Dr S Balaraman Human Rights Defender Award, instituted in memory of late Dr S Balaraman, former acting chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission, was on Tuesday presented to ISRO former scientist Nambi Narayanan on the occasion of the World Human Rights Day.
The award, which consists of a cash component of Rs 5,001, a plaque and a scroll of honour, was presented to Narayanan by Gandhi Smarak Nidhi chairman P Gopinathan Nair at the Press Club Hall. The award was instituted this year by the Civil Rights and Social Justice Society (CRSJS).
“The fearless legal battle that Nambi Narayanan waged against the fabricated ISRO espionage case and the police officers who were behind it makes him truly eligible for the prize,” Gopinathan Nair said, after presenting the award.
Nambi Narayanan said that he considered the award more valuable than the Rs 1 crore that he has claimed as compensation in his defamation case.
Senior journalist B R P Bhaskar delivered the Dr S Balaraman Memorial Human Rights Lecture on the occasion. He called on the police to shun colonialist culture.
CRSJS secretary R Jayachandran presided over the function. Councillors K Suresh Kumar, R Harikumar and CRSJS office-bearers spoke on the occasion.
