It’s the stars and x’mas trees that create the Christmas spirit, which the city-zens have taken to a new level by seeking out several other items to celebrate the festival. Colourful and glittering stars, x’mas trees with decorative lights, crib sets, Santa Claus, bells and what not -    all are adding colour to the cityscape, especially at night.

Shopkeepers are geared up with their new collections of decorations at affordable prices for the festive season. According to them, sales will pick up during the weekend. Usually, people start buying decorations after December 22, they said.

There are different kinds of stars in different sizes in the shops in the city, with prices ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 650.  A new trend witnessed this time is the demand for LED stars and x’mas trees. Like in previous years, this year too the demand for Chinese products is high. The price of LED stars starts at Rs 200. A wide variety of crib sets are also available in the market, priced between Rs 500 and Rs 4,500. According to shop owners, Chinese products are cheaper when compared to Indian products but the latter last longer.

“We sell small and big Christmas trees at a price range of Rs 75-Rs 500. Most of the big ones have already been sold out. A variety of decorations are also sold in shops including balls, bells and mounting papers,” said Xavier, a shop owner at East Fort. Decorations are available at prices as low as Re 1.

Usually, a heavy rush is witnessed a week before the festival, but this time, according to the shopkeepers, the demand is less for the decoration items. The vendors hope the sales would pick up by this weekend.

The market has also something new for those celebrating Christmas. Leaf-shaped lights are the latest attractions.

This x’mas season, the market has introduced Christmas trees that sport lights in place of leaves. These are priced from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000, varying with size.

Big organisations and banks are already active in the market buying cards to send Christmas and New Year wishes to their clients and customers.
