In search of inner peace

From acupuncture to reiki, Malayalis are always open to experimenting. ‘Falun Dafa’ - a Chinese Spiritual Therapy - another novel addition to this list, is becoming popular in Kerala with its therapeutic and healing prowess.

How would you gain inner peace in this strenuous world? Like Indian Yoga, a Chinese spiritual therapy ‘Falun Dafa’ is gaining popularity around the state today with its therapeutic and healing prowess. By releasing the energy channels, this therapy purifies the human body by relieving the stress while donating unconditional inner peace. Falun Dafa, which means ‘Dharma Wheel Practice’, can be learnt absolutely free of cost.

This is indeed a novel phenomenon that needs ample definitions. Falun Dafa is not a theory, a philosophy, or a religion. It is learning the method to assimilate one’s mind and behaviour with their daily life by ardently following truthfulness, compassion and tolerance. Interestingly May 13 is observed as World Falun Dafa Day.

Though banned in China, Falun Dafa is making waves in about 100 countries by 100 million people from different regions, religions, race and age practicing it. Today, there are five Falun Dafa practitioners in Kerala.

Falun Dafa is also called Falun Gong. Falun Gong is a system of meditation and spirituality that combines gentle ‘qigong’ exercises. The practitioners seek to align their thoughts and actions with these principles in their daily lives.

Falun Dafa has five sets of exercises that include meditation as well. The exercises in it are simple and can be learnt within an hour. They work at different levels. The first exercise breaks through the energy blockages and opens the meridians in the body. The second builds up tolerance and increases wisdom. And the third cleans the body and fourth makes energy in all the meridians flow. The fifth exercise is in sitting posture and it helps to strengthen one’s karma and divine power. This exercise can be learnt within an hour by everyone from the age group of three to ninety and can be practiced by yourself at home.

Some studies conducted by the experts reveal that these exercises have cured many diseases including cardio-vascular, cancer, blood-pressure, hypertension and many others.

Falun Dafa is a cultivation practice of Buddha School and it was publicly introduced in China in 1992 by Li Hongzhi. May 13 is the birthday of Hongzhi.

“Falun Dafa does not work like an organization or company. There are no members and money involved. The exercises are taught free of cost to anyone willing to learn,” says, one of the practitioners from Kerala, Naveen Athrappully.

Naveen who hails from Thrissur is currently settled in Kochi. “The practice has benefited me and my family a lot. Falun Dafa practitioners are required to abide by the three principles of truthfulness, compassion and forbearance. The teachings are expounding these principles,” says Naveen.

When it was first introduced in China during 90s billions of people embraced it within a short period of time. But then it met with resistance from the then communist government, which felt that practitioners of Falun dafa were outnumbering communist followers. This fear followed with Falun Dafa’s followers’ persecution and torture. But then people began practicing it at home, ensuring secrecy from even neighbours. Since 1999, Falun Dafa is persecuted in China. The reasons for the persecution include, difference in ideology as the Chinese government has Marxist-atheist view while Falun Dafa believes in Buddha and karmic retribution. Secondly,  the practitioners grew in popularity exponentially after it was introduced in China - in China itself there were 70-100 million practicing in 1999. The Falun Dafa practitioners are strictly required to stay away from politics; there were more practitioners than members in the Chinese communist party. The personal jealousy of Jiang Zemin, the then president of China, was the person who initiated the persecution. “Now, it facts upon  the biggest human rights violation in China as it is still prevailing the torture of Falun Dafa Practitioners and even involved in organ harvesting,” he says.

“A complete cultivation practice contains both the spiritual and physical aspects, and expounded that the key to cultivation was the improvement of ones moral and mental quality. A practitioner, first of all, should be good person with high moral standards. One should make an honest living and give up selfish and harmful thoughts. In case of conflict, one should consider others first, search with oneself to find one’s own shortcomings, never harm others for one’s gain and let go of the attachments to politics, fame, wealth and lust.”

“I have been practicing Falun Dafa nearly a decade. I do not work for Falun Gong. Falun Gong does not pay me money for spreading the practice. I do it completely out of my interest as service. This is a practice that has benefited me and my family and I have learnt it for free and hence, I teach them free of cost,” says Naveen.
