THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Urgent steps should be taken to set up a deep sea harbour at Poovar, the Thiruvananthapuram Coastal View has said.
“The country needs mother ships and super tankers with more than 20-metre depth. Poovar is the only place found by National Maritime Foundation and Union Shipping Ministry with the prerequisites like 25-30 metres natural depth just ten nautical miles from the international shipping route, vast beach, government-owned land of around 120 acres and availability of pure water, among other requirements for deep sea ship building centres. But the state government conducted feasibility study at Azheekkal in Kannur, spending more than Rs 2 crore, though it has much less advantages compared to Poovar.
The government did not recommend Poovar even after the expert committee of the Union Shipping Ministry rejected Azheekkal for technical reasons. Still, the government is again conducting feasibility study at Azheekkal using Rs 90 lakh,” said Coastal View coordinator Amaladasan Pereria in a press meet here on Thursday.
