A four-year-long wait is finally ending on Monday, with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy all set to inaugurate the newly-constructed Central Bus Terminal at Thampanoor which will give a facelift to the City Central.

The project has been constructed under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) concept by Kerala Transport Development Finance Corporation (KTDFC) for the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The total expense of the project was Rs 240 crore, including the cost of the land and construction cost.

The construction of the complex was commenced in March 2010 and scheduled to be completed within two years. However, various incidents, including the confusion between departments over the widening of the approach road and the accidental death of a labourer, delayed the project.

Constructed in an elevated area of land, the new terminal will free the citizens from the menace of waterlogging. The campus has a main block and an administrative block. The twelve-storeyed main block will have a commercial zone which consists of multiplex theatres, food courts and a gymnasium.

The circular-shaped facility is divided into four zones - an arrival bus bay zone, a departure bus bay with passenger facilities, a bus terminal supporting facility zone with idle bus parking, repair garage, fuel-filling facility, and the commercial area. There will be a single entry and single exit system for the buses and the bus bay can accommodate 29 buses at a time.

Parking space will be arranged for 220 cars and 500 two-wheelers in the three floors. Facilities have been arranged for water harvesting, waste management and measures to prevent waterlogging along with passenger escalators, four passenger lifts and two freight lifts.

The inaugural ceremony to be held at 4 pm will chaired by Transport Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan. Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor; Speaker G Karthikeyan; ministers, including V S Sivakumar and Aryadan Mohammed; Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan and Mayor K Chandrika are among those who will be present at the function.
