Marking the end of a long wait, Kattakkada is all set to become the sixth taluk in the district from Tuesday. The capital now has five taluks including the newly-carved out Varkala taluk.
The announcement will be made by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at a function to be held at Kattakkada Junction chaired by Speaker G Karthikeyan on Tuesday evening.
Kattakkada taluk was carved out by including 14 villages from Neyyattinkara and Nedumangad taluks. The taluk includes 12 panchayats (Kattakkada, Vilappil, Vilavoorkkal, Malayinkeezhu, Maranaloor, Poovachal, Vellanadu, Kuttichal, Kallikkadu, Amboori, Ottashekharamangalam and Aryankode) and 14 villages (Vilavoorkkal, Malayinkeezhu, Vilappil, Maranalloor, Kallikkadu, Kulathummal, Vazhichal, Amboori, Keezharoor, Ottashekharamangalam, Vellanadu, Veeranakavu, Perunkulam, and Mannoorkkonam).
A procession of thousands of people representing various panchayats that come under the new taluk will be taken out as part of the inaugural ceremony. Deputy Speaker N Sakthan, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash, Health Minister V S Sivakumar, District Collector K N Satheesh, A Sampath MP, A T George MLA, District Panchayat president Ansajitha Russel and Kattakkada panchayat president G Stephen will be present at the function along with the presidents of all the 12 panchayats that come under the taluk.
The first tahsildar of the taluk will be K P Kaladharakumar.
As part of the inauguration, all the government educational institutions that come under the taluk have been given a holiday on Tuesday.
