With more and more incidents of ganja sales being reported from various parts of the district, the police and excise officials have launched operations including surprise raids to nab the culprits.

Excise officials on Wednesday arrested a man with more than 30 kilograms of ganja from Neyyattinkara bus stand. The arrested has been identified as Udayakumar of Pottayilkada, near here. He was arrested while he was on his way to the Akshaya shopping complex near Neyyattinkara bus stand for selling the ganja.

According to the excise officials he possessed more than 30 kilograms of ganja and was a dealer of the banned stuff. He reportedly used to sell it to the shops inside the shopping complex.

Following a tip-off regarding the ganja deals at Neyyattinkara, the area was under the surveillance of excise officials. The officials said that they were able to nab only one person in the gang and a search for the others was on.

This is the third such incident that has come to light this month alone. Earlier, Thumba police had arrested  Santhosh, a resident of Chirayinkeezh, for carrying several small packets of ganja. The police had seized as many as 27 small sachets of ganja from him. Santhosh was a regular ganja peddler.

In another incident, an 80-year-old man was arrested by excise officials for cultivating ganja on an experimental basis at his residence.

The accused was arrested for cultivating 26 four-month-old cannabis saplings among betel nuts in his home garden. His accomplice was also nabbed.

Now, officials, both in the city and rural limits, are planning to carry out more raids.
