Following a visit to the Sri Chitra Poor Home, the Kerala Women’s Commission has demanded that the government should immediately take over the institution. In a recommendation submitted to Chief Minister and Social Justice Minister, it pointed out that the takeover is necessary to sort out the problems existing in the Poor Home.
Transparency regarding the activities of the institution and making social auditing mandatory are suggested.
A team comprising Commission members Noorbina Rasheed, K A Thulasi and Lisi Jose and circle inspector Arun Raj, who is the director in charge, visited the home on Wednesday.
The inmates complained that the authorities do not often behave properly towards them. The Commission has suggested special training and counselling for these employees. Action must be taken to construct sufficient number of toilets for boys and girls. Leakage in buildings has to be fixed before the onset of monsoon on a war-footing.
The building sheltering young boys has to be made mosquito-proof and bedspreads and blankets have to be provided. Children must be given proper medical care and charging money from the inmates for getting their clothes stitched should be stopped. It should be ensured that the materials sponsored for the children reach them, without letting others misuse it.
