Lightning: City to Host Seminar

In the wake of mishaps caused by lightning in the recent past, a one-day workshop throwing light on lightning hazards and protection strategies will be held on May 30.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the wake of mishaps caused by lightning in the recent past, a one-day workshop throwing light on lightning hazards and protection strategies will be held on May 30. The workshop, organised by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. K Muraleedharan MLA will preside over the function.

 At the workshop, there will be comparisons of the places where lightning has caused damage in the recent past, as well as the time of the year when they occurred. First aid and other emergency procedures to be adopted, will be discussed. The workshop will also discuss methods of avoiding lightning accidents to prevent personal injury and loss of life. Basic external and internal protection systems as per standards will also be covered.

 The workshop is aimed to benefit officials from various government departments like PWD, KSEB, Housing Board, Electrical Inspectorate, BSNL, ISRO, State Planning Board, City Corporation, Department of Disaster Management and Agricultural Department. It is also aimed at mobile phone operators, builders, personnel from establishments like Travancore Titanium Products, residents’ association representatives and media representatives.
