THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Oommen Chandy has demanded the Centre to exempt nurses, who cleared job interviews before May 30, from emigration clearance.

In a letter written to Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Chandy reminded that she had earlier given an assurance in this regard. Accepting a suggestion from Norka minister KC Joseph, the union government had earlier declared that nurses who cleared the interview would be exempted from emigration clearance.

The chief minister welcomed the actions taken by the union government to prevent recruitment fraud in nursing sector. However for effective implementation of the measures, Indian Embassies in the 18 countries where emigration clearance has been made mandatory, should take follow up action in association with government and private agencies in the respective countries.

Chandy pointed out that so far Indian Embassies in no countries, other than Kuwait, have taken such measures. Hence nurses from here are not able to take up jobs in these countries after May 30. The country will lose many job opportunities if the union government does not urgently intervene, the chief minister reminded the union minister in his letter.
