THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Following the ‘City Express’ report, published on  Monday, regarding the data shown in the police website in detecting, registering and collecting fine in the COTPA-related cases as zero under the city and rural limits, the City Police have come up with the correct figures.

Meanwhile, though the police furnished the correct data before ‘Express’, the rectification in the website is yet to be done.

Admitting that it was a technical flaw on the part of department in updating the data in the website, Rasheed, Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Police, District Crimes Record Bureau (DCRB), told ‘Express’ that the post of the AC of DCRB was lying vacant for quite some time.  “As the former official was on leave, the work on entering data online came to a standstill. However, the problems will be rectified within two to three days following the instruction from the City Police Commissioner,” he said.   The City Express report had said that the fine amount collected was found to be ‘Nil’ in the website and, hence, the detection and registration of cases were found to be too low when compared to other districts both in 2015 and 2014.

In the data of cases registered in 2014, it was found that only 13 people were fined in the city limits under Section 4 of IPC and 72 people under Section 6(b) of IPC, while in the rural limits the numbers were five and 381 respectively. Both Section 4 and 6(b) are the corresponding acts to enforce COTPA.

Interestingly, the data also showed that no amount had been collected as fine from any offender by the police in 2014. In 2015,  the figures of the fine amount remain ‘Nil’ under the city limits.

According to the City Police, the correct data during the first five months of 2015 are as given in the table.
