Nishagandhi Puraskaram for Padma Subrahmanyam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noted Bharatanatyam exponent Dr Padma Subrahmanyam has been selected for this year’s Nishagandhi Puraskaram (Nishagandhi award) instituted by the Tourism Department, according to a statement from the department.

The award carries a purse of Rs 1,50,000, citation and a statuette.

She was selected for the award, which is instituted to honour eminent personalities in the fields of dance and music, for her contribution to Indian classical dance, the statement said.

“Dr Padma Subrahmanyam is one of the finest exponents of Bharatanatyam in the country and she has played a significant role in reinvigorating the dance form across the world,’’ said Tourism Minister A P Anilkumar while announcing the award.The Nishagandhi Puraskaram is presented as part of the annual Nishagandhi Festival organised by the Department of Tourism every year here.

The jury comprising Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University Vice-Chancellor K Jayakumar, Tourism Director Sheik Pareeth and senior journalist Gouridasan Nair has selected her for the award. The award will be presented  on Tuesday, the opening day of the Nishagandhi Festival here.

Dr Padma Subrahmanyam is the recipient of several awards and honours, including the Padma Shri in 1981 and the Padma Bhushan in 2003.
