THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: City Police on Monday will launch its ‘She Auto’ project to ensure safe travel for women of all ages. Vehicles included in the project will be installed with a tablet which will give real-time information on speed, location, time and fare to travellers. Free internet will be available in the vehicle. The commuters can locate the nearest vehicle through mobile app.

“Drivers of good conduct and character have been selected after a detailed background inquiry through police stations and beat officers of Janamaithri community policing scheme,” said City Police Commissioner R Sparjan Kumar.

The project is part of Home Department’s special policing initiatives and gender sensitisation programme.

450 autorickshaws have been included in the first phase. They are stationed at the auto stands at Thampanoor Railway Station, Pettah Railway Station, East Fort, Palayam, Peroorkada, Medical College and Kazhakoottam.

The police said it has been ensured that the drivers who have been included in the project don’t have any criminal case and also are those who have a record of behaving properly with passengers. They have been given training on women safety and about the correct professional behaviour towards travellers, especially women.

The vehicles have been stamped with “She Auto” sticker and an identification number. The drivers have been given identity cards and are directed to wear it while on duty.

The commissioner said the drivers will be monitored in future as well through the police stations concerned. A special cell headed by Control Assistant Commissioner has been formed to monitor the project and drivers.

The public can lodge complaints or give suggestions about the project over toll-free numbers 100, women helpline numbers 1091 and 9995399953.
