Tele-Veterinary Unit Launch Tomorrow

Express News Service

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Animal Husbandry Department is introducing a tele-veterinary unit to rush to the aid of animals in distress. The mobile unit will have a portable x-ray unit, ultrasound scanner and a radiography unit.

In addition, it will also have an ‘animal lift’ designed by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). Animals which cannot stand on their own can be lifted using this device.

The mobile unit can help provide on-the-spot diagnosis for animals. There are facilities like surgical instruments and steriliser to provide appropriate treatment should the animal have bone fractures.

There will be a veterinary doctor in the unit, who can consult other doctors at the District Veterinary Hospital and even have video conference from the mobile unit. There will also be a technician and a driver who will help the veterinary doctor in using the medical equipments.

After creating an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) of the sick animal, it would be sent to the District Veterinary Hospital, so that the EMR can be stored in the server. This will be later useful, when the animal will be brought to the hospital.

Cables have been provided, so that power can be drawn from the local power supply. However, there is a built-in generator, so that the mobile unit can be operated even in remote places with no power.

The unit will be inaugurated by Minister for Animal Husbandry K P Mohanan on Wednesday at C-DAC at 11.30 am.
