Three Students Jump off Bridge, Rescued

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three girl students attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the Valiyathura bridge on Monday afternoon. However, the students, all 15-year-olds, were rescued by fishermen and taken to the Medical College Hospital here. According to police, the trio are class 10 students of St Phelomina’s school, Poonthura, and natives of Valiyathura. The students, who had SSLC examination in the afternoon, skipped the exam and reached the Valiyathuira pier around 2.30 pm. They immediately jumped off from the bridge. However, some fishermen witnessed the incident and rushed to the spot and took them to the shore. The students were taken to MCH and they are still under the observation of doctors. “As per initial findings, we believe that the students had tried to commit suicide out of the fear of failing in examination. However, their teachers said the students were bright and they did not fail in the school-level examinations. Though we went to the hospital for taking the statements, the students were unconscious and had not recovered from shock. Therefore the real reason behind the incident could be revealed only after quizzing them on Tuesday”, said K Dhanapalan, SI.
