5-member Robbery Gang Busted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  The Medical College Police on Tuesday busted a five-member gang in connection with a robbery that took place in a lodge near RCC at Medical College here last week. The police identified the accused as Roy,34, of Pullannivila; Ajesh,34, of Udumbanchola, Idukki; Sajeer,35, of Uzhamalakkal; Shafeeq, 30, of Edava, and Joy Antony alias Auto Joy, 42, of Anadu. Joy is facing criminal charges in a case involving the murder of his wife in 2013 under Nedumangad police station limits. According to police, the incident pertaining to the case occurred on March 22. In the early hours, Mohanan , a native of Ayoor in Kollam district, who was residing in a room at Rohini lodge near Regional Cancer Centre, Medical College, was attacked by the five-member gang and looted the gold chain weighing three sovereigns,  `23,000 cash and the mobile phone. Mohanan, the victim, broke his arm in the attack, police said. 

Incidentally, all the accused are auto-drivers operating services at Medical College stand and nearby areas, police said.

The police zeroed-in on the culprits after verifying the footages of CCTV cameras installed in the lodge and seeking assistance from cybercell. They were nabbed from a hide-out at a deserted place near a stone quarry at Erinjiyam near Nedumangad. The accused were later produced before the magistrate and remanded in the judicial custody for 14 days.
