THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A civil police officer, Arun Nath, of the Armed Reserve Camp was seriously injured at Mudavanmugal in an assault allegedly by DYFI activists when the police tried to break up a clash between DYFI and RSS activists who fought each other late on Sunday. He is under treatment at General Hospital and his condition is said to be stable.
Poojappura Police registered a case against three DYFI activists - Anoop, Prasanth and Ajith of Mudavanmugal - for allegedly triggering the clash.
According to the police, the incident took place around 8 pm when RSS activists were celebrating Raksha Bandhan. DYFI activists were waiting nearby for the inauguration of a party committee office. After some time, the DYFI activists started abusing the RSS workers leading to a clash. The police battalion deployed there was unable to stop the clashes and the workers were dispersed only after police reinforcement came in.
The activists have been booked for unlawful assembly, rioting and voluntarily causing hurt to deter the public servant from discharging his duty. A huge battalion of police is now camping in the area. Efforts are on to nab the culprits behind the attack on the policeman.
Meanwhile, close to the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, four people were injured as CPM and BJP activists clashed at Inchivila near Parassala on Sunday. The injured were identified as Mariyadas, 42; Saju, 38; Adith, 12, and Abhilash, 16.
The BJP accused the CPM of attacking them at Naduthottam when they confronted CPM activists about stone pelting, while the latter said the BJP had barged into their activist’s house leading to the fight.
Parassala Police have registered a case, but said it was a long-standing feud between two gangs over some previous issues rather than a political clash.
