THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Wanna travel but afraid of arranging safe transport and accommodation? Tourfed, the state-run tour and travel agency, offers you secure and exciting trips to exotic locations in the country and abroad. The seven-year-old agency had recently announced a slew of trips, both domestic and international, at nominal rates.

The agency’s most popular single day trip connecting Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi has also been made attractive by adding Kochi Metro to the itinerary. The other attractions of this “all in one” tour are travel by air, sea and rail besides sight seeing in Kochi.

Tourfed managing director Shaji Madhavan said families constitute a majority of their clientele. “Ninety percent of our customers are families and hence vacations are the most busiest time for us. Being a government agency, we associate only with recognised and reputed travel and lodging partners,” he said.

The agency offers single-day tour programmes within the state, and packages to other-states and foreign countries. Other-state destinations range from pilgrimage sites like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kanyakumari and Mookambika to holiday hill stations like Shimla and Manali.

The agency’s rates are affordable and are lesser than those charged by private agencies in some routes, according to Shaji Madhavan. “We pass on a significant portion of the discounts we get from our lodging partners to the customers. Our programmes are both safer and cheaper than private players,” he said.Tourfed has catered to over 19,000 customers during the past seven years. This does not include single day trips. It is also a preferred choice of employees of various offices like the Postal Department and AG’s Office.

Despite the post-demonetisation slump, the agency could register good business this year. In five months starting March, about 6,000 persons realised their travel dreams with its help.

Shimla, Manali favourites

According to Tourfed, popular other-state destinations of their Kerala clientele are hill stations of Shimla and Manali. Multi-day Delhi tour featuring Taj Mahal is second most preferred trip. The agency is planning campaign programmes with special focus on IT sector. “We have good scope in the IT sector where the employees are mostly young and affluent. We plan to make inroads into Technopark, Infopark and other private firms,” Shaji Madhavan said.
