THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has condemned the Kanhangad Nehru College incident where students offered condolences to the principal on her farewell day. Terming it unacceptable, Pinarayi said in the Assembly the incident is much more than harassment against a woman. The Collegiate Education Director will probe the incident. Based on the report action will be taken, said Education Minister C Raveendranath.
Raising the issue in the Assembly,Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said the students offered the Principal a mock funeral. Referring to two other similar incidents where women principals were harassed - at Palakkad Victoria College and Ernakulam Maharaja’s College - earlier, Chennithala said SFI students have been engaging in such actions. This could even lead to demand for ban on campus politics, he said.
Raveendranath said three students have been suspended and a detailed probe is being carried out by the Director of the Collegiate Education Department. Based on the report, further action will be taken.
Chennithala expressed unhappiness that the Education Minister was reluctant to even condemn the incident. Following this, Pinarayi got up and strongly condemned the attack while stating that the SFI, the CPM’s student wing, do not approve of such acts. “Teachers should be treated with more respect than our own mothers. So insulting them in such way cannot be accepted. . We strongly condemn this. This is much more grave than harassment to women,” Pinarayi said.
