TIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The hartal announced by the Congress in Amboori panchayat in protest against the alleged CPM-DYFI attack on their partymen ended peacefully though police presence has been enhanced in Vellarada and nearby areas to avoid any untoward incident. The hartal was announced after six Congress workers were injured in an attack allegedly carried out by DYFI-CPM workers on Monday night. As per the police sources, the attack occurred near Vellarada Junction when the procession carried out by both the parties came face to face.

The CPM workers were returning from the town after organising a protest march against the murder of SFI leader at the Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam. Meanwhile, the Congress workers were holding a march against ransacking their flexes by suspected CPM workers. The CPM-DYFI workers, who were travelling in a mini lorry, raised slogans and gave catcalls when they came across the Congress rally.

This led to tensions and finally escalated into a street brawl in which an equal number of activists from both the sides received injuries. Two of the Congress workers received gashes on their heads, which the party alleged were due to attack with sharp weapons, while the rest sustained injuries on their legs. Six CPM workers, including Amboori panchayat president Shaji, were admitted at the Government Hospital at Vellarada.

Neyyattinkara DYSP B Harikumar, however, maintained the Congress workers were hit with flag sticks and not with swords as alleged. He added cases and counter-cases have been filed and arrests would be made once normalcy is achieved. “Arrests would be effected soon. But first, we are trying to restore calm,” he said.
