PTA, coaches back principal; allege foul play in food-poisoning incident

Days after the government transferred the principal of G V Raja Sports School following a Special Branch (SB) report, the parents’, teachers’ and coaches’ association (PTCA) of the school has alleged

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Days after the government transferred the principal of G V Raja Sports School following a Special Branch (SB) report, the parents’, teachers’ and coaches’ association (PTCA) of the school has alleged ‘foul play’ in the whole affair. The PTCA functionaries alleged a nexus comprising some school staffs and SB personnel had hatched a conspiracy against the principal as they were “irked by his reformist decisions.”

“It had only been a year when C S Pradeep, the transferred principal, took administrative control of the school,” Sanalkumar P, PTCA president, told reporters on Tuesday.“But during his time, the school achieved great heights in studies, sports and other activities. The principal also initiated measures to bring the campus under CCTV surveillance and introduced the biometric attendance system. It seems the developments have not gone down well with some and they turned against him,” he alleged.

Sanalkumar said though the school witnessed a number of food poisoning incidents in the recent past, it was for the first time an intelligence report came up against such an incident. He alleged an SB officer attached with the Aruvikkara police station had an active role in the said conspiracy.

“This incident has come at a time when the government as well as the Sports and Youth Affairs Department and PTCA are working towards making the school as a Centre of Excellence. With some teaching staff  reluctant to follow the government orders and directions, we fear the objective won’t be achieved very soon. A thorough probe is needed in this,” Sanalkumar said.

It was last Friday that Pradeep was transferred to the Kannur sports division after an SB report pointed towards the role of insiders in the food poisoning incidents at the hostel. The report called for a probe after raising doubts the food poisoning was the handiwork of the principal. The report refers to an incident in June in which some students were hospitalised following food poisoning.

Sports Minister rejects plea

Sports Minister A C Moideen the other day had said the Finance Department will conduct a probe into the alleged irregularities and corruption at GV Raja Sports School. It is said though a section of the students approached Moideen with the demand of reconsidering Pradeep’s transfer, he summarily rejected the same.
