Corporation to collect waste from saloons, supermarkets

The city Corporation is set to act as a coordinator for collection and disposal of waste materials from barber shops, tailoring shops and supermarkets. 

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The city Corporation is set to act as a coordinator for collection and disposal of waste materials from barber shops, tailoring shops and supermarkets. The initiative is part of ‘My City Clean City’ project which is done to expand the existing periodic dry waste collection programme. By August, the Corporation will open a new counter to segregate plastic wastes.
In a meeting held with the representatives of various organisations on Tuesday, the corporation has come up with a new system by modifying the waste collection calendar.

Corporation Development Standing Committee chairman Vanchiyoor P Babu and health supervisors attended the meeting.For segregating plastic wastes from supermarket the corporation will open a counter by August.The Corporation will begin the first phase of collecting plastics as per the plastic waste management rules of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

User fee for collecting the plastic waste will be R5 per kg. These plastic wastes will be handed over to Sarojini Ponnaiya Foundation in Tamil Nadu which is already collecting corporation plastic waste.

Hair disposal

The agencies assigned by the corporation will collect the waste from barber shops and beauty parlours in the city once in two weeks. It will be handed over to a wig-making company.
The user fee for two seat barber shops will be R100, 4 seat R200 and shops with more than 4 seats will have to pay R300.

Waste cloth disposal

Tailoring shops also generate huge amounts of waste cloth. The collection of this will be done by the corporation on August 18.The tailor shop owners who are interested in participating in this mission can register their names with the health inspector office or project secretariat on or before August 3 by 5 pm.    
The agency will hand over this to a company that makes doormats using such cut cloth pieces. The Corporation will obtain no costs from the tailor shops as on August 18 and the further user fee will be fixed later.
