VIJAYAWADA: A Proposal to build a dedicated water storage project to meet drinking needs of Amaravati has moved a step forward with the State government giving administrative sanction for construction of a barrage near Vykuntapuram. According to a government order (MS 48) issued by the Secretary of Water Resources Shashi Bhushan Kumar on Friday, `2,169 crore would be spent on the project, which envisages storage of 10 TMC of water to provide drinking water to the new capital.
The proposed barrage would be built about 23 km upstream of Prakasam Barrage and nearly 60 km downstream Pulichintala project. Shashi Bhushan Kumar directed the officials of Krishna Delta System (KDS) to take necessary steps for the project execution at the earliest.With the State government issuing the administrative approval, the Water Resources Department would shortly float tenders.
The officials plan to launch the barrage works in next three months.
Out of the total Rs 2,169 crore, Rs 772 crore would be spent for procuring required land, while `1,088 crore would be spent on civic works of the barrage. The remaining amount would be spent towards admnistrative works, labour charges and construction of necessary structures – like navigation network, bridges and buildings.
