VIJAYAWADA: Gannavaram airport is set to start its cargo services with 15 metric tonne of cargo load every day, from Tuesday onwards. The much awaited project recently received all clearances from the centre. Though the airport authorities had readied the terminal for cargo services in 2017, they got postponed due to delay in getting the permission of Airport Authority of India (AAI).
Soon, the 15 metric tonnes will be increased to 30 metric tonnes. A proposal for a cold storage has also been made, but it is yet to be processed.
Speaking to Express, G Madhusudhan Rao, Airport director, said, “The cargo services are sure to attract large crowd of businessmen and industrialists who wants to export or import goods. A lot of the seafood, agricultural produce is exported from this region.
Currently, the flights can handle only around 800 kg, but with cargo, 15-30 tonnes of goods can be transported every day.
