Soumya talks non-stop. For someone who couldn’t say “Hi” a year ago without breaking into sweat, that’s a lot. “My communication skills have improved,” she says. “I have learned different approaches. I am a confident person now.” Like many other students in her college — College of Basic Science and Humanities, Bhubaneswar, she volunteers for youth wings of several civil society groups which have come up in the city, whenever she gets time. She has been doing so for over a year now.

“Social networking sites attracted me to community service more than posters and articles as I was quite active on these sites,” she says. “I felt that my weekends were going futile. So I willingly joined some youth groups and, now I spend six to seven hours during weekends on voluntary work.” Starting from tree plantation, health camps, poster making, rallies, consumer issues and village adoption programmes, Soumya has participated in all such events and even helped in organising inter-city meetings and youth exchange programmes. “My idea of working with three to four NGOs at a time is that the experience you gain from them is varied. You get to do so many different things. The experience I gain is an add-on for a job,” says Soumya.
