Preserving official documents and manuscripts according to set standards makes an archivist

Archives Keeping aims to help students understand the principles and methods of description of archival materials according to approved standards among the archival community in India. The course prepares individuals to become archivists, record managers, preservationists and microphotographists.

■ Annamalai University, Chidambaram

The university offers a one-year part-time PG diploma in the subject. Admission is based on merit. Students will learn to maintain records, conserve texts and other important material, document information found. It is a job-oriented course. Candidates need to have a postgraduate degree in History or Archaeology. They can be employed as professors, archivists, librarians or record managers.

■ Osmania University, Hyderabad

The Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology offers a one-year PG diploma in archival science and manuscriptology for those with a relevant degree.

■ School of Archival Studies, Kolkata

Established in 1891 at National Archives of India, Kolkata, the School has been conducting a training course in archives keeping since 1941 as the Institute of Archival Training. The school offers a one-year diploma course in Archives and Records Management and usually starts around October. Curriculum includes four core papers in Archives Management, Public Records Management, Conservation and Reprography, Information and Communication Technology and two optional/specialisation papers on business and private archives and practices in archives and archival library and documentation. Those with a Master’s in Arts or Science with at least 50 per cent aggregate marks can apply for the course. Course fee is Rs. 1,500. Admission is through merit.
