MCC Emerge Regional Winners in GREAT Debate 2014

Madras Christian College’s (MCC) Aparna Gopalan and Ewan Nikhil Thomas were declared winners of the GREAT Debate Competition 2014 held recently in Chennai organised by the British Council in collaboration with Chevening Scholarships programme and Virgin Atlantic. Over 24 colleges from across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry participated. The final debate with the topic ‘Is there a gap between academic achievements and career prospects in India?’ saw Zeeshan Ahmed Shakir and Shekhar Pathak from Sathyabama University emerge as runners-up. MCC spoke against the topic and Satyabama spoke for the topic. The judges included K Saraswathi, Secretary General, The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Gladston Xavier, Head of the Department of Social Work, Loyola College, Chennai, and VS Kumar, senior trainer, consultant and financial expert. Mei-Kwei Barker, Director, British Council, South India, was also present. The winning team will participate in the grand final in New Delhi this year.
