Computer software consists of programs that enable computer functions and usability. Software programs are what makes a computer work and it is usually written in machine language — which usually includes programming languages like C, C++, C#, Java, Python, Ruby, Smalltalk and JavaScript among others. These coding languages allow the machine to perform various functions. Operating systems (Windows, Linux), multimedia programs (KMP Player, VLC), editing tools (Adobe, NeroSmart Essentials) and malware computer viruses are all software programs. You need to have expertise in each software program to deal with them separately as there are many such programs available. A lot of private computer education centres also offer certified courses in various software programs.

As a research centre set up by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, it has branches in Ahmedabad, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Alongside research they also offer software development courses and PG diploma courses.
