Those who use public transport regularly can relate to the hassle of waiting for a bus without knowing when the next one will arrive. Making public transport commuter-friendly, a team of engineering students from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), Mysuru, have come up with an android-app called MITRA that provides all details pertaining to bus stops, schedules and even has a panic button in case of emergency for women commuters. The students’ initiative has been implemented by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

The team includes five students from sixth semester in SJCE: Puneeth Ganadinni, Raghavendra Vada, Vikranth, Abhishek Somashekar and Venkatesh Kurle.

Commuters’ buddy

Mysore Intelligent Transport System dubbed as MITRA, is the android App. It has been available on the Google Playstore for two months. Puneeth Ganadinni, who was part of the team that developed the App, said they had earlier built an android app for college use which collated exam time table and results. “KSRTC announced a contest and our professors encouraged us to take part in it. We developed this app and it got selected,” he explained.

Women’s safety

The students also included the ‘Women’s safety’ feature in the app. This feature is not restricted to KSRTC travel alone. A registered user can make use of the “panic button” option to reach out to her family in case of an emergency. They also get a link to the location from where the panic button was pressed. At present, the team is taking care of maintenance of the App while KSRTC is managing the customer care. Over 17,000 commuters who have downloaded the app and are using it currently.
