MDMK General Secretary Vaiko today said his party would support PMK nominee RKR Anantharaman in the Lok Sabha elections in Puducherry.

"I urge partymen to work wholeheartedly for the victory of the PMK candidate," he said in a release here.

An ally of BJP, MDMK's support comes against the background of confusion in the NDA camp in Puducherry.

The All India NR Congress and the PMK, both part of the NDA combine have fielded R Radhakrishnan and RKR Anantharaman respectively for the lone Puducherry Lok Sabha seat.

While AINRC headed by Chief Minister N Rangasamy is an ally of the BJP in Puducherry, PMK is a partner in Tamil Nadu.

After AINRC struck a poll deal with BJP on March 20, efforts were made by BJP to persuade PMK to withdraw its nominee from the fray in the Union Territory.

The efforts, however, did not succeed and nominees of both PMK and AINRC filed their nominations on April 5.

DMDK, another ally of BJP, has announced that it would keep "equal distance" from both AINRC and PMK in Puducherry.

The party said its flags, banners or portraits of its leader Vijayakanth should not be used in the campaign by any political party in Puducherry.
