The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal Sunil Gupta today forwarded to the Election Commission the complaint received from the Trinamool Congress on the incident of fire in which Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had a narrow escape in Malda.
"Yes, I have received the complaint and it has been forwarded to the EC today. I have no comments. The EC will take the final decision," Gupta told PTI here today.
Assistant CEO Amitjyoti Bhattacharya said, "If we get any feedback from the EC on this, we will communicate immediately."
Banerjee had a narrow escape yesterday after a fire broke out in a hotel room where she was staying in Malda, while campaigning for the April 24 Lok Sabha elections.
In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath and state's CEO, senior Trinamool leader Mukul Roy had accused the EC of failure to ensure the Chief Minister's safety and security.
"Law and order in the state is now under the absolute superintendence, direction and control of the EC, which has failed in its duty to ensure her safety and security," Roy said in his letter.
"This incident could have had fatal and disastrous consequences with repercussions in West Bengal and the entire nation," he said, adding, "One cannot rule out a deep, devious conspiracy behind this incident."
