Summary

Actor-politician Vijay's TVK on Monday created a record of sorts in the electoral history of Tamil Nadu and emerged as the single largest party by delivering a shock defeat to incumbent DMK and its president, Chief Minister MK Stalin in his Kolathur constituency, while the AIADMK was pushed to a distant third spot.

This was the first time since 1967, when the first non-Congress government (DMK) came to power in the state, that a party other than the two Dravidian heavyweights emerged victorious in the hustings.

Vijay and TVK have many firsts to their credit and the the party founder will be the first person from a minority religion -Christianity- to helm the state.

While Vijay won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies, his party has netted 107 seats and has become the single largest party in the 234-member House. Elections were held on April 23 and the counting of votes done on Monday.

Perhaps the biggest shock was CM Stalin being defeated by a margin of 8,795 votes in his Kolathur constituency by little known V S Babu, who was formerly with the DMK and an ex-MLA. More than 10 ministers including Geetha Jeevan and Ma Subramanian were defeated. Stalin had last tasted defeat in 1991.

Even Deputy CM Udhayanidhi's prospects appeared dim for a while as he trailed behind the TVK nominee in Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni. Eventually, he won.

As soon as it became clear that TVK was inching towards an unprecedented, huge win in its debut polls, party workers and supporters gathered in front of party office at Panaiyur here and burst firecrackers and distributed sweets.

Also, Vijay's victory and often-repeated assurance of share in power to like-minded parties is expected to open a new chapter in the history of the state and TVK supporters expect the Congress (5), IUML (2), Left parties (4), VCK (2) and PMK (5) as well to offer support and have a share in power. Together such parties have won or leading in a total of 18 seats. TVK needs 118 seats to form government.

This will the first time in Tamil Nadu that a party will assume power a little over two years after its founding. TVK has clocked nearly 35 per cent (34.92) vote share in its debut polls.

The TVK was launched in February 2024.

While the DMK allaince has won 73 sea (24.20 per cent voteshare), AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami won by a record margin of 98,110 votes in his home segment of Edapadi in Salem district. The AIADMK has won 47 seats (21.25 per cent voteshare).

While the party's seniors, including C Ve Shanmugam and SP Velumani won hands down, many others, such as former minister P Thangamani, suffered shock defeats.

Interestingly, the TVK made heavy inroads in the AIADMK's bastion, western Tamil Nadu that includes Coimbatore, even as DMK emerged victorious in some seats.

DMK President and outgoing Chief Minister Stalin took the defeat in his stride and said that his party bowed and accepted the people's verdict.

He said he was truthful to all sections of people and had acted as per his conscience and also worked beyond his capacity for people's welfare.

He asserted that his party, which worked well as the ruling party would from now on work well as the main opposition party. Stalin said in his public life, he had seen lot of victories and defeats as well and DMK's political journey will continue without any slackness.

He said ideology is important rather than victories and defeats alone.

AIADMK general secretary Palaniswami said that he accepts the people's verdict in the elections.

In a statement here, he said, "I express my gratitude to all the people, who rose up and performed their democratic duty in the assembly elections".

Stating that the people were judges here, he said, "Therefore, I wholeheartedly accept the decision given by the people".

He said, "We will soon recover from this setback."

Meanwhile, scores of tinsel town names, including 'superstar' Rajinikanth greeted Vijay on his poll show.

National award winner Dhanush, musician Anirudh Ravichander and many others extended their greetings.

Interestingly, among the TVK winners was actor-director Srinath, who defeated state minister P Geetha Jeevan in Thoothukudi.

DMK faces anti-incumbency test as AIADMK, TVK threat loom large

DMK faces anti-incumbency test as AIADMK, TVK threat loom large Tamil Nadu awaits a high-stakes verdict on Monday as counting of votes for the April 23 Assembly elections begins, with the outcome set to determine whether the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam retains power or if the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam returns to office after five years in opposition.

Counting will commence at 8 am across 62 centres under a comprehensive three-tier security arrangement, with postal ballots taken up first, followed by electronic voting machines. Over one lakh personnel, including counting staff and security forces, have been deployed, while the Election Commission has introduced QR code-based identity checks to regulate access.

Polling was held across all 234 constituencies, witnessing strong participation. Exit polls have largely projected a win for the DMK-led alliance, though several indicate a close fight, reflecting a competitive electoral landscape. The contest has been further shaped by the entry of actor-politician Vijay’s TVK, which is expected to make an electoral debut with notable impact, and the continued presence of Seeman’s NTK.

Their participation has added a multi-cornered dimension, raising the possibility of vote splits in key constituencies. Both the DMK and AIADMK have activated war rooms to monitor counting in real time, deploying legal teams and communication networks to respond swiftly to any disputes or irregularities.

The heightened vigilance follows narrow margins in several seats in the 2021 elections, with parties bracing for similarly tight contests. With political stakes high and margins expected to be close, the results are set to shape the state’s political trajectory.

Exit polls favour DMK-led bloc, TVK emerges as wildcard

Exit polls broadly indicate a return to power for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance, with several projections placing it ahead of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led front and suggesting a comfortable majority in the 234-member Assembly, where the halfway mark is 118. However, two surveys pointed to a hung House.

Axis My India projected 92–110 seats for the DMK-led alliance, 22–23 for the AIADMK plus, and 98–120 for Vijay-led TVK. Kamakhya Analytics forecast 78–95 for the DMK plus, 68–84 for the AIADMK plus and 67–81 for TVK. Other polls indicated a stronger DMK performance.

People’s Pulse projected 125–145 for the DMK-led alliance, 65–80 for AIADMK-BJP and 18–24 for TVK. Matrize forecast 122–132 for DMK-Congress, 87–100 for AIADMK plus and 10–12 for TVK, while P-Marq projected 125–145, 65–85 and 16–26 respectively.

JVC was the only pollster projecting an AIADMK-led win, forecasting 128–147 seats for AIADMK plus, 75–95 for DMK plus and 18–15 for TVK. Praja Poll estimated 148–168 for DMK plus, 61–81 for AIADMK and 1–9 for TVK, while People’s Insight projected 120–140, 60–70 and 30–40 respectively. The wide range underscores a fragmented contest, with TVK’s debut emerging as a key variable in a closely watched three-way race.

This clearly indicated that Vijay's TVK may change the traditional bipolar electoral politics of Tamil Nadu.

As DMK trails to third place, 'celebration' tents dismantled at party headquarters

Visuals of dismantled tents at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters, marked a sombre Monday morning as early counting trends for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections placed the ruling party at a surprise third position.

As the DMK-led alliance trails, a starkly different scene is unfolding in Panaiyur and Neelankarai, the bastion of TVK.

Security has been significantly tightened around the residence of actor-turned-politician Vijay in Neelangarai and the TVK party office in Panaiyur.

Hundreds of enthusiastic supporters have begun to gather as the debutant party shows a strong performance, leading in 97 constituencies and locked in a neck-and-neck battle with the AIADMK, according to the Election Commission website.

The data currently suggests a tectonic shift in the state's political landscape, with several DMK heavyweights trailing in their respective segments.

Police personnel have been deployed in large numbers across the capital to maintain order as trends continue to emerge from the 62 counting centres statewide.

Vijay's TVK appears on course to create history, races towards majority mark

Resurgent AIADMK hold its ground even as debutant TVK sweep through several bastions

In a dramatic reconfiguration of Tamil Nadu's political landscape, the 2026 Assembly Election trends on Monday showcased a "resurgent" AIADMK holding its ground even as the debutant TVK swept through several bastions.

As counting progresses into the afternoon for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has extended his lead to 17,766 votes in his home constituency of Edappadi, maintaining his status as the party's most secure candidate.

In the northern belt, Maragatham Vetrivel continues to show strong momentum in Pappireddipatti with a widened margin of 19,692 votes, while C Vijayabaskar in Viralimalai has also seen his lead grow to 9,686 votes.

Other significant cushions for the party include Shanmugam C V in Mailam with 10,898 votes and Mukkur N Subramanian in Cheyyar, who now holds a lead of 10,760 votes.

Despite these strongholds, the party faces intense pressure in several key seats where margins remain dangerously slim.

The tightest contest is currently in Peravurani, where Govi Elango is leading by a mere 274 votes, followed closely by the volatility in Alangulam, where K R P Prabakaran holds a lead of just 425 votes.

In the high-altitude constituency of Yercaud, Usharani P sees her lead precarious at 359 votes, while Vijayasureshbabu in Viluppuram is managing a slim margin of 361 votes.

In the western region, former minister K C Karuppannan was leading by 2,365 votes, as the AIADMK continues to navigate a highly competitive three-cornered fight across the state.

Speaking to PTI Videos on the trends, Santhosh said the day was special as it reflected the deep affection people in the state have for 'Thalapathy' (Vijay).

"Yeah, it's a massive moment. I can see that people are very emotionally connected to 'Thalapathy'. By this evening, it will be a big moment for him," she added.

She asserted that even before the first half of the day had concluded, the trends indicated a clear path to victory for the TVK.

TNCC chief Selvaperunthagai, Congress candidates trail

TNCC chief K Selvaperunthagai trailed behind Vijay-led TVK candidate Thennarasu K in Sriperumbudur (SC) assembly constituency, who established a clear lead since the votes were taken up for counting on Monday morning.

At the end of the ninth round of counting, Thennarasu secured 38,394 votes and thus established a clear lead of 14,086 votes to his nearest rival Selvaperunthagai.

Like their party chief, the Congress candidates were also way behind the TVK in other constituencies.

TVK continue to lead in 14 of 16 assembly constituencies in Chennai

Vijay's TVK surges ahead in trends, leads in over 100 constituencies

With the TVK leading in more than a hundred constituencies in early trends in the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, actor-turned-politician Vijay's party has performed well across the state.

It has done especially well in northern districts, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Thiruvallur, making significant inroads into the Dravidian majors, according to trends released by the Election Commission of India on Monday.

The TVK has also made its presence felt in central Tamil Nadu, including Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Karur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, and Mayiladuthurai.

The DMK and its allies' bastion of Madurai city, comprising north, east, west, central, and south segments, was dominated by the TVK.

TVK made a strong impact in southern districts, including Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi.

TVK candidates were also leading in several constituencies in the delta districts, including Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai, as well as parts of Salem.

In addition, the TVK made gains in several pockets of Kanyakumari, traditionally a Congress stronghold.

Women candidates locked in tight contests as TVK disrupts Tamil Nadu poll trends

High-profile women candidates, including AIADMK's Leema Rose Martin and BJP's Tamilisai Soundararajan, are locked in intense battles as early trends in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections point to a significant disruption by actor Vijay's TVK.

According to data from the Election Commission of India, several seasoned women leaders are finding themselves in three-cornered contests where margins remain razor-thin.

Leema Rose Martin, the state's wealthiest candidate contesting from Lalgudi, is currently in a tight contest.

As of the eighth round of counting, she is trailing by approximately 5,500 votes against the DMK's T Parivallal.

Political analysts note that the TVK candidate has significantly eaten into the traditional AIADMK vote share in this segment.

In Mylapore, former Governor and BJP's Tamilisai Soundararajan is currently in third place.

The segment is witnessing a surprising lead for the TVK candidate, followed by the DMK incumbent, as the urban vote appears to have shifted towards the actor-politician's new outfit.

Similarly, sitting MLA Vanathi Srinivasan is trailing in Coimbatore South.

The latest trends show her nearly 2,500 votes behind the TVK candidate as counting enters crucial middle rounds.

In Perambur, AIADMK candidate Porkodi Armstrong, who is in a direct contest with TVK chief Vijay, was leading in the early rounds but has now slipped to third place as of the ninth round.

Vijay has taken a commanding lead here.

However, some women candidates have managed to hold their ground.

While her party's candidates are struggling in most segments, DMDK chief Premalatha Vijayakanth is leading by 1,212 votes in Vriddhachalam.

M R Pallavi of the TVK is maintaining a steady lead of over 9,000 votes in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar against the DMK's K S Ravichandran.

Incidentally, several first-time women candidates from the TVK are outperforming seasoned politicians in urban pockets, particularly in Chennai and surrounding districts.

Meanwhile, women candidates from Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), which fielded women in 50 per cent of the seats, are trailing in most constituencies, often in fourth place.

Maragatham Kumaravel of the AIADMK, who held a lead of over 19,000 votes around noon, is now holding a slender lead of roughly 118 votes in Maduranthakam as of the eighth round.

Election officials highlighted that women voters turned out in record numbers this year - 86.2 per cent - surpassing men and emerging as key arbiters in this high-stakes election.

Of the 25.3 lakh additional voters in 2026 compared to 2021, approximately 20.8 lakh (82.4 per cent) were women.

Although this election saw the highest number of women candidates so far at 443, they accounted for only 11.01 per cent of the total 4,023 candidates.
