A beauty pageant queen and a regular sight on ramps, Nicole Faria now wants to give Bollywood a try. Her debut Hindi film Yaariyan, directed by Divya Khosla Kumar, sees her play a gregarious character who is obsessed with herself.

Nicole was spotted by Divya during a talent round at a beauty pageant in Vietnam where she was representing India. “The producers of Yaariyan could not get hold of my contact number so they looked me up on a social networking site to reach me. Initially, I brushed their message off as spam but it was my mother who took the initiative and sent her contact details on behalf of me. In a matter of days, I received a reply from the T-Series group,” she says.

In Mumbai, Nicole not only met with T-Series but also sat in for an audition. “I play Jia, a college hottie. The film is about friendship and the story of five close-knit friends. The movie also marks the debut of other young talents,” she says.

Talking about her shift from the ramp to the silver screen, Nicole says that at age 15 she knew she wanted to be a model but admits that acting was on her mind back then too. “While I had gotten used to being on the ramp, the niggling desire to be an actress kept surfacing. When I spoke about working in films with my parents, their first concern was about me completing my education. So I continued with it. During my undergraduate years, I worked in plenty of shows in Delhi. That was such a busy time that I almost forgot that I had wanted to take an acting course too. Thankfully, since I was into musicals and cultural activities singing is a passion these helped me hone my acting skill along the way.”

On her first break into films, Nicole feels she has been lucky to have had a director like Divya Khosla Kumar shape her. “It was a fabulous experience. In fact, Divya initially shot the scenes on her handycam before we went for the real take. She is a perfectionist and her efforts seem to have worked. For many of us (in the cast)  this is a first, yet those who have watched the film assumed we were seasoned actors,” she says.

Nicole, who has now settled in Mumbai and has kept her modelling shoes aside, is focusing entirely on her acting career. “I do not want to juggle between two careers. I have had my share of the modelling world,” she says.
