Being popular and celebrated also means that when it comes to your romantic life, they are bound to be under the constant glare of the paparazzi.

And while fans love the details, it does disappoint them when a much-loved star couple ends their relationship, be it for whatever reason. It is also become a challenge for celebrities to get back together, not with the countless people watching and judging their actions.

The much photographed couple Sunanda Pushkar and Shashi Tharoor, known for their public displays of affection also faltered miserably under publlc glare. Trouble came when Sunanda accused Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar of ‘stalking’ her husband and trying to end her marriage. Two days after, she was found dead.

As the investigations in her death continue, here’s a look at a few high-profile couples who seemed to be in it for the long haul but called it quits quite suddenly and unexpectedly amid rumours and reports of extra marital affairs and ‘irreconcilable’ differences.

Hrithik & Sussanne Roshan

Fans all over were shocked when the couple’s 17-year marriage came to a sudden end. Amid rumours that their marriage was in trouble for quite some time, Hrithik put all of them to rest by releasing an official statement saying “Sussanne has decided to separate from me and end our 17-year relationship (13 years of marriage).

This is a very trying time for the entire family and I request the media and the people to grant us our privacy at this time.” Things went awry in the couple’s life when Bollywood gossip linked Hrithik to his Kites co-star Barbara Mori and his hectic work schedule adding to the woes.

Throwing caution to the winds, Kamal and Sarika lived together in the 1980’s before marrying each other after the birth of their first child Shruti Haasan. Kamal has earlier said in his interviews that he thought“marriage is a folly and is slowly becoming redundant”. His affair with his costar Simran Bagga caused a rift between Sarika and him, leading to the couple filing for divorce in 2002 and finalising it in 2004.

The couple fell in love during the shooting of the film Dev D and married each other in April 2011. With reports of Kalki feeling stifled in the marriage and Anurag’s wandering eye, the couple issued a joint statement stating that they were taking time off to figure things out. Things escalated further when reports linking Anurag and his Gangs of Wasseypur-actress Huma Qureshi emerged.

Kalki then took to Twitter telling people to leave Huma alone and stating their problems had nothing to do with her.

Singing sensation Kishore Kumar found love for a third time with Yogita Bali in 1976 after Madhubala and Ruma Guha Thakurta, but the marriage didn’t last long and ended two years later. Yogita fell in love with Mithun Chakraborty and went on to marry the dashing actor in 1979 while Kishore married starlet Leena Chandavarkar in 1980.

It was definitely not all sweet romance for well-known playback singer Geeta and director Guru Dutt who married each other after a courtship of three years. Both had an excessive drinking problem and Dutt’s affair with Waheeda Rehman didn’t really help matters. Dutt attempted suicide after Geeta left him in 1963.

Geeta died at the age of 41 due to liver damage while Dutt met his end in 1964 from a cocktail of alcohol and sleeping pills.
