When the late director A T Abu needed assistance for scripting during the making of Dhwani, someone suggested him the name of a theatre buff from Malappuram. The life of this simple man, who had been an employee in Malappuram KSRTC, began to undergo a massive makeover since then. T A Razak, who has penned several successful scripts in Malayalam, has completed 25 years in the industry. And to mark this occasion the scenarist is all set to call the shots for his debut film titled Moonam Naal Njaayarazhcha. The movie will have Salimkumar in the lead along with Babu Antony and Samudrakani. The female cast is yet to be decided. Speaking more about the movie Razak says, “The core of the subject is religious conversion and the plight of several humans who had to change the name of the God they worship to overcome poverty. The shooting will begin in Thodupuzha and Dubai very shortly.” It was reported initially that Mammootty will play the lead in the film. “It was Mammookka who nudged me to direct a movie. I had him in my mind even when I started working on the film. But later I felt that the subject will not suit him. But my next movie will be with Mammookka,” he says. With the success of Dhwani, Razak was picked to write a play for the late actor Thilakan. The latter also introduced him to G S Vijayan who was then hunting for a story for his first movie. “Ghoshayatra was born thus,” Razak reminisces . Going through those flashback years that moulded the script writer in him, Razak says that everything has been coincidental. “Life has always given me surprises and challenges. Needless to say never in my wildest dream I thought I will pen scripts for movies.” Born in very humble backgrounds,the biggest ambition that Rasak in his young days cherished was to direct a play and if luck favours, act in a vital role in it. “During those school days, we were permitted to participate in youth festivals from eighth standard only. Reaching high school, I composed a play and very proudly made my seniors also act in it. Lady luck favoured me and our school won the first prize for drama competition that year. Since that day, at the agae of 13, I became the play writer, director and main actor in our school,” the 53-year-old recollects. Moving out from school, Razak continued with the routine of writing plays and directing them. The farmers and casual workers of his village also had roles in his plays. “Even at that age, I made it a point to communicate a message to my viewers through the plays. My topics were very relevant and timely and this is a rule I follow even now,” he says. Needless to say, T A Razak scripts had always something to convey be it Perumazhakalam, Kanakinavu or Bhoomigeetham. “Perumazhakalam is one of my favourites. It is a film about the greatness of forgiving. With Ganga’s decision to forgive her husband’s murderer, she saves yet another woman from the plight of widowhood. This is not something easy for a woman to do.” As Razak puts it, he never intends for a box office hit while planning a script. “Though cinema is a big business, the primary motive is not entertainment. Artists are a powerful clan who can act as a medium to convey proper messages to the society through their works. Films being one of the most widely popular medium, it is important that each movie should make each of its viewer think and rethink. But that does not mean, the fun element should be cut off,” he adds.
