New Year Potpourri in Mollywood

Cinegoers can expect a visual treat in the coming days with several back releases.

The year that went by was a delightful visual experience for the cineaste of the state. There was a steady rise in the number of Mollywood films released that were unique in subject and treatment. It seems the trend will persist this year too with a potpourri of films to be released in the next 100 days. While some of the Christmas releases like Drishyam, Ezhu Sundararathrikal and Oru Indian Pranaykadha are still running in the theatres, more movies are ready to hit the screens.

From Literature

Mammootty will be seen reprising two characters etched by eminent writers Vaikom Muhammad Basheer and Paul Zacharia. The much-touted Balyakalasakhi, an adaptation of the book of the same name by Basheer is expected to reach the screens soon. In the poignant love story of Majeed and Suhara that takes place in 1940s, Mammootty will be seen donning the role of Majeed and his father. While Isha Talwar plays Suhara, Tanushree Ghosh, Meena Seema Biswas and KPAC Lalitha also essay major roles in the film to be directed by Pramod Payyannur. Meanwhile, shooting of ‘Praise the Lord’ by Shibu Gangadharan in which Mammooty will be seen enacting a high range farmer Joy, is progressing at Kanjirappally. The film which is based on Zacharia’s short story humorously narrates the incidents that happen in the life of two youngsters who elope and reach Joy’s house. Ahmed Sidhique, Reenu Mathews, Innocent and Indrans are the other actors of the film penned by T P Devarajan. Another major project of the actor is Aashiq Abu’s underworld tale ‘Gangster’, the shooting of which is expected to begin once the shooting of these films are completed.

For Mohanlal, there is no immediate releases except the Tamil action thriller Jilla in which he plays father to Vijay and the campus thriller ‘Koothara’ in which he plays an extended cameo. In February, the shooting of ‘Peruchazhi’ helmed by Tamil director Arun Vaidyanathan will begin in which the actor plays a full-length comedy role.

Young Brigade

The youngsters of the industry have much to look forward to in the coming months. The shooting of Prithviraj-starrer London Bridge has been completed and will reach theatres soon. The film is expected to be a break of sorts for Prithviraj who concentrated on serious roles last year. The big budget film directed by Anil C Menon was completely shot in London. Andrea Jeremia and newbie Nanditha are the lead ladies of film which reveolves around the triangle love story of Vijay (Prithviraj) who reaches UK on a student visa, a rich lass Pavithra (played by Andrea Jeremiah) and a Malayali nurse, Merin (Nandita).

Salala Mobiles starring Dulquer Salmaan and Nazriya Nazim will also reach the audience soon. In the romcom penned and directed by debutant Sharath A Haridaasan, the young actor will be seen donning the role of a mobile shop owner and Nazriya, his customer. Tamil comedian Santhanam also appears in a major role in the film.

Fashion photographer-turned-actor Abrid Shine’s 1983 which revolves around cricket is yet another film that will soon hit the screens. The film will see Nivin Pauly in several get ups. The story narrates the memories of Rameshan (Nivin) when India lifts the World Cup in 1983. The film has a large cast including Anoop Menon, Joy Mathew, Rajeev Pillai, Jacob Gregory, Saiju Kurup, Aju Varghese, Shine Tom Chacko and Srinda Ashab.

Dileep’s comedy movie Ring Master directed by Shafi is yet another flick. The film narrates the humorous incidents in the life of a dog trainer. Keerthi Suresh and Honey Rose also play major roles in the film.

Lijin Jose has almost wrapped the shooting of his upcoming film Law Point that narrates how a case influences the life of a lawyer and his client. The film stars Kunchakko Boban and Namitha in the lead roles. The shooting of Manju Warrier’s comeback film ‘How Old Are You’ directed by Rosshan Andrews began shortly at Kochi. The film also stars Kunchakko Boban.

Mamas’ ‘Mannar Mathai Speaking 2’, a seqel to the hilarious earlier sequences enacted by Innocent, Sai Kumar and Mukesh will also reach soon to entertain the audience.
