It’s an unlikely pair; Deepan, who is known for high-voltage thrillers, and Anoop Menon, who has always steered away from conventional outings, are joining forces for The Dolphin Bar, which is billed as a hilarious family drama.
The director-scenarist duo have long shared a good rapport, with Deepan having known Anoop from the days of his second movie Hero. “It is a wrong notion that Anoop can only think of serious stuff. I feel he can comfortably tackle genres like action and humour,” says Deepan.
Narrating how the idea for The Dolphin Bar came their way, Deepan says, “After Hero, we worked together for Gangs of Vadakkumnathan, one movie in the anthology D Company. It was then that Anoop spoke to me about The Dolphin Bar.”
As the title suggests, the film revolves around a Thiruvananthapuram-based bar named Dolphin, owned by Suresh Gopi. “Suresh Gopi’s appearance and dialect is the USP of the film. His character, Panayamuttam Sura, comes in a totally different get-up and speaks in Thiruvananthapuram slang,” says Deepan.
Interestingly, the bar has much prominence in the film, and the director says the film revolves around Sura, his family and the bar goers. “This man who owns many pubs was a commoner who gradually turned rich. The film is a light-hearted tale of how Sura protects his family and takes revenge against those who turn against him,” says Deepan. After Beautiful, Anoop Menon plays a singer again in this film. He too sports a fresh look for the film. “Anoop’s character is a good friend of the bar owner. They celebrate life in every way they can,” the director says.
One of the highlight of the film is the remix of the evergreen hit song, O Mridule.. from the 1982 film, Njan Ekananu penned by director Sathyan Anthikkad. Interestingly, ace actor Madhu, who was a part of the original song, makes an appearance in the remix too. “This song is one of my personal favourites,” Deepan says, adding that actor Meghna Raj plays the female lead, also named Mridula, and has a crucial role in the film. Kalpana dons the role of Sura’s wife.
Earlier, there were reports that Mohanlal will make a cameo appearance in the film, and that the entire film cans the incidents of a single day. However, the director clarifies that the superstar is not part of the film and that the storyline underwent several changes.
Sreenivasan, Saiju Kurup, Suraj Venjaramood, Joju Mala, Nishanth Sagar and Indrans also play prominent roles in the film.
M Jayachandran has composed the music for the two songs in the film. The remix version of O Mridule.. is sung by Sudeep Kumar. Anoop Menon has penned the other song.
The film was mainly shot in Thiruvananthapuram. The shooting is almost complete, except a few scenes which are to be canned in Mumbai.
The Dolphin Bar will hit the screens by March-end.
