Good films deserve a good audience. The aphorism holds true the other way round too. Kazhcha Chalachitra Vedi - the city-based film collective born out of this conviction - will venture into film screening with the mobile theatre, Cinema Vandi. The travelling theatre will be flagged off on its journey round the state and beyond by Adoor Gopalakrishnan in a function to be held at KSTA hall, Thycaud on January 24 at 11 am.
Kazhcha Chalachitra Vedi functions as an incubator for the concept of people’s cinema. In line with its alternative to industry-driven cinema, Cinema Vandi will collaborate with local film societies, cultural organizations, libraries, clubs and film enthusiasts to organise screenings. The facilitating of conducive screen space is the only factor that needs to be arranged locally, given that the travelling theatre is equipped to provide a film watching experience on par with a standard cinema hall. Cinema Vandi comes as a complete package with high quality systems can deliver high end audio and visual quality.
Cinema Vandi debuts with ‘Oralpokkam’, a film that is produced in association with the Delhi-based Niv Art Centre. The movie, produced through online crowd funding, received the FIPRESCI and NETPAC awards at the IFFK this year. It also clinched a positive review in the internationally-acclaimed film magazine Hollywood Reporter.
The capital for the project will mainly be found through contributions from audience and film enthusiasts. The expatriate Malayali community, in solidarity with the nouveau film movement, will organise international screenings of the movie.
The first of such will be organised by the Sydney Film Lover’s Forum in Australia on January 25. It will be followed by screenings in Canberra and Ireland.
